Salmon Fishing Scotland River Tay Reports and Prospects March 2009.

Salmon Fishing Scotland River Tay Reports and Prospects March 2009.

Tay Reports

Weekly Report.
Week ending 7th March 2009
Last week reported the best catch of the season so far with 34. There were again salmon reported from all over the district which was very positive for this coming week. There were a number of other fish caught and not reported including a 20 pounds salmon at Burnmouth. As I understand it quite a few are being caught in Loch Tay as well.

The temperature of the water dropped a bit last week with the colder weather but that should not impede the progress of Salmon up the river. The beats around Dunkeld reported a good run going through on Friday so they should have made it well up the system by now.

The weather has been unsettled over the weekend causing the river to rise today (08/03/2009) however once it settles and assuming the weather remains all right there should be better catches throughout the system this coming week. It was this week last year the spring catches improved dramatically.

Prospects for the week.
As of Monday morning week commencing 9th March 2009 the prospects on the Tay look good with the river dropping after a 7 foot spate on the lower river at the weekend. Assuming the weather remains reasonably settled the catches should get better this coming week. It was this week last year the catches improved and the real spring run started.

The water temperature has dropped a bit with the colder weather to just below 40 degrees Fahrenheit or 4 degrees Celsius however I do not think that will impede the progress of salmon up the system. A reasonable run of fish were reported going through the Dunkeld area on Friday of last week so there are fish about.
I would predict much better catches this coming week. There is good availability throughout the river so why not have a go.

As to methods assuming the river settles back to a good height, the most likely method of catching a Springer in the Tay this week will favour all methods with settled water. There will certainly be better conditions for fly fishing and spinning from boat and bank. Harling or on some beats spinning from the bank remains a favoured method on the Tay.

Finally all anglers are reminded that the Tay's policy for spring 2009 is that every angler should release the first salmon caught each day, and then no more than one Springer should be taken per day. Spring salmon are a precious resource. Please do what you can to ensure their numbers are allowed to conserve them and produce more spring salmon for the future.
