Tay Reports

Weekly Report for week ending 25th July 2009.

Last week reported 68 Salmon and 13 Sea Trout which was a reasonable catch despite the very unsettled conditions. We had unsettled weather for most of the week with heavy thundery down pours making the river rise and fall on a regular basis.

There were other fish caught and not reported. There are a number of Salmon being caught in the Ericht system due to the frequent downpours allowing the fish to run. Also Salmon are being caught in the Garry. Best salmon of the week was a 22lbs salmon off the Islamouth beat caught on the fly.
Beats that faired well during the week included Ballathie, Islamouth area, Dunkeld House, Newtyle and Dalmarnoch in the middle area of the Tay. The fresh water is making salmon run through the lower reaches which is frustrating for the lower beats. Hopefully with more settled weather there will be a more even spread of catches throughout the system.

Salmon have been reported throughout the river but not in great numbers. Hopefully this will change this week and see the start of a reasonable summer run.
The first Grilse have arrived with odd ones reported over the last few weeks and this should improve as we get nearer to August.

Sea trout are being caught throughout the Tay which should encourage a cast in the evenings with a fly rod.

The river temperature is around 60degrees Fahrenheit or 15 degrees Celsius.

May I remind anglers coming to the Tay about the Catch and Release policy which is that all hen salmon and sea trout caught should be returned and large male salmon over 15 pounds to preserve sport for the future. It goes without saying that all red fish should de returned as well.

If you have any news or pictures of catches or experiences on the Tay and you would like to share them please email me on stanley.fishing@ukonline.co.uk
Thank you for the contributions so far.

Mr Donald MacLean's lovely 8.5 pounder landed in the Cotter Pool of the Newtyle beat at Dunkeld, Perthshire, Scotland caught fly fishing. The fish was returned.

Prospects for the week commencing 27th July 2009.
Monday morning again was unsettled after heavy rain on Sunday. This week again will be unsettled with more rain forecast but there is the chance of some lighter showers towards the end of the week which should allow the river to settle.

The Summer Grilse and Salmon run should get stronger over the next few weeks. All that is required is settled conditions and catches will improve dramatically.

The water temperature is about 60 degrees Fahrenheit or 15 degrees Celsius.

The river is running at a good height which will allow salmon to run the entire river Tay.

There is good availability throughout the river so why not have a go.

As to methods, the river is settled and at a good height, the most likely method of catching Tay Salmon this week will favour all methods with settled water. There will certainly be good conditions for fly fishing with a higher river temperature now encouraging floating lines. Spinning from boat and bank are also favoured.. The rise in river temperature should encourage baits spun upstream and retrieved quickly.

Finally all anglers are reminded that the Tay's policy for Catch and Release in 2009 we now recommend that every angler should release all hen salmon caught each day and all Sea Trout. We also recommend that all male salmon over 15 pounds should be released and certainly any red fish . Salmon are an extremely precious resource. Please do what you can to ensure their numbers are allowed to conserve them and produce more salmon for the future.

Salmon Fishing Scotland Colin Leslie the Salmon King.

Salmon Fishing Scotland Colin Leslie the Salmon King.

Final farewell to the ‘Salmon King’

Jul 17 2009 by Les Stewart, Perthshire Advertiser Friday

THE funeral of one of Scotland’s best-known anglers will take place today in Ruthven Parish Church, near Alyth, at 11am.

Colin Leslie, who was a ghillie on the renowned Cargill Beat on the River Tay for more than 50 years, died peacefully in Blairgowrie Cottage Hospital on July 10, aged 84.

Born in November, 1924, Colin was the third child of four and was employed from an early age on his father’s farm.

He always had a love of the great outdoors and from a ‘wee laddie’ he loved to fish in local rivers, catching his first salmon – a massive 18 pounder – at the age of just 10.

Educated at Alyth Primary School – on his first day he ran away – he joined the Royal Navy, aged 16, and did his training at Dartmouth Royal Navy College on HMS Ganges.

He then went to RNB Chatham where he volunteered for Coastal Forces.

He served aboard motor torpedo boats off the coast of France, England and Norway and had the misfortune to be sunk by ‘friendly fire’ from the RAF.

He was hit by 13 pieces of shrapnel but recovered to tell the tale.

After the war he pursued his greatest love – fishing – and become known around the world after he took up his angling duties on the River Tay in 1946. And the rest is history, as they say.

He took hundreds of people out to fish on the Tay, including American millionaire Nelson D. Rockefeller, the New Zealand king of the Maoris, the Japanese ambassador, Field Marshall Montgomery’s Chief of Staff and the Roux brothers, to name just a few.

Many of his fishing exploits are recounted in his book, Scotland’s Salmon King, printed last year by Melrose Press Ltd, of Ely, Cambridgeshire.

The publication contains many humorous stories about his fishing days, when an occasional dram or two would be taken as he wished countless anglers ‘tight lines.’

Colin holds the record for the greatest number of huge salmon caught in Scotland since the Second World War.

His biggest was a 56-and-a-half pounder, hooked in the Sandyford Pool after playing it for an hour.

After retiring from Cargill, he worked for three years at Meikleour for the late Lord Lansdowne and always maintained that his work was his hobby.

Colin is survived by his wife, Nancy, his sister Flora and sons Peter and Morris and their families.

Tay Reports

Weekly Report for weekending 18th July 2009.

It is with sadness that I report the passing of a well known character of the river Tay in Colin Leslie. Colin Ghillied and looked after the Cargill beat on the Tay for more years than I can remember. He caught and guided many an angler onto several thousand salmon over the years and will be sadly missed. Our thoughts go out to his family at this time.

Last week reported 83 Salmon and 14 Sea Trout which was a better catch from the previous week in late June. We had unsettled weather for most of the week with heavy thundery down pours making the river rise and fall on a regular basis.

There were other fish caught and not reported. Best salmon of the week were 16lbs salmon off the Cargil and Dalmarnock beats.
Beats that faired well during the week included Dalmarnock, Ballathie, Cargil, Islamouth and also some of the middle beats.

Salmon have been reported throughout the river but not in great numbers. Hopefully this will change this week and see the start of a reasonable summer run.

Prospects for the week commencing 20th July 2009.
As of Monday morning the prospects on the Tay look better with low clear water. Cooler settled conditions are forecast but there is the chance of some heavy thundery showers again this week.

The water temperature is about 62 degrees Fahrenheit or 17 degrees Celsius.

The river is fairly low but that will not stop salmon running the vast river Tay.

There is good availability throughout the river so why not have a go.

This was Raymond Hughes from Ireland enjoying July Salmon fishing on the river Tay last year. Let us hope there is a good run of summer Salmon and Grilse to come this July.

Prospects for the week commencing 6th July.
As of Monday morning the prospects on the Tay look better as the week progresses. The river was still muddy from the landslide on Monday and very heavy thunder showers hopefully will clear that out of the river and cool the water temperature. More settled conditions are forecast for the end of the week.

The water temperature is about 65 degrees Fahrenheit or 18 degrees Celsius.

The river is fairly low but the heavy showers should raise the level and freshen the river up to encourage salmon to run.

There is good availability throughout the river so why not have a go.

As to methods, the river is settled and at a good height, the most likely method of catching Tay Salmon this week will favour all methods with settled water. There will certainly be good conditions for fly fishing with a higher river temperature now encouraging floating lines. Spinning from boat and bank are also favoured. Harling remains a popular method on the Tay. The rise in river temperature should encourage baits spun upstream and retrieved quickly.
