The weather has been so mild recently and the game crops are still green. This is a field of artichokes that is over 6 feet tall in places. This is perfect cover for pheasants but not so good for beaters to navigate.

Salmon Fishing Scotland Autumn Salmon Fishing on Tweed.

Salmon Fishing Scotland Autumn Salmon Fishing on Tweed.

Yesterday I was lucky to be invited down to the river Tweed in the Scottish Borders.

This was the main pool on the Tweedhill beat not far from Berwick at the bottom end of the Tweed being fished by my host Mike Sanders. There had been a lot of salmon in this pool but a 4 inch rise in the river level had taken most of them away further upstream. It is very unusual for the river to be so low at this time of year and for so many salmon still to be in the lower Tweed.

This was further up the Tweedhill beat.

Later in the afternoon I went further upstream to the Tweedmill beat to see Andy Murray who ghillies there. This is the famous Cauld. The Tweedmill beat is opposite Tillmouth. They had caught 19 salmon during the day.

This is the famous Border Maid pool which is shared with Tillmouth. Andy and I had a cast for the last hour but nothing was obliging, just a few pulls hence the bad light in the picture.

"My best fish so far!" A 21lb sea-liced cock salmon caught by Jeff Slater of Duncan House, Kelso on 18th August on the Tweedmill lower Tweed beat.

Salmon Fishing Scotland River Tay Report for last few days of 2009.

Salmon Fishing Scotland River Tay Report for last few days of 2009.

Tay Reports

Report for the last 4 days to the 15th October 2009.

The last 4 days of the 2009 season reported 208 Salmon and 5 Sea Trout which was reasonable catch for the season so far despite the tough year on the Tay. The weather was settled with a high pressure giving us perfect river conditions.

There were other fish being caught and not reported. There was a spread of Salmon throughout the district as all the beats were catching but not in the usual numbers for the time of year.

Quite a few good fish were caught this past week yet again which is quite heartening. Best salmon of the week was a magnificent 28lbs salmon off the Upper Murthly beat caught from the boat by Robin Melville and carefully returned. Robin Melville had a memorable last few days on the 2009 Tay season catching a 28, 25 and a 20lbs salmon all of which were returned. Mike Smith on the Burnmouth beat at Stanley had a 25lbs salmon as well from the boat which was returned. Despite the poorer runs this year the Tay can still produce the really big salmon.

Several beats recorded good individual catches for the last 4 days. These included 26 from Waulkmill, 27 from Stobhall, 19 from Taymount, 15 from Ballathie and 15 from Cargill.

Many thanks to all who have sent me their individual experiences over the season.

The river temperature has now dropped to around 50 degrees Fahrenheit or 10 degrees Celsius.

There is no doubt the river has had a very hard season and a number of anglers have responded by returning the majority of the salmon they caught. The Tay would like to thank you for that which will hopefully show benefits for the future.

Brian Archer from Somerset caught this 25lb salmon on a copper Toby at Meikelour. It was returned safely.

Salmon Fishing Scotland Tay Salmon Released to Spawn.

Salmon Fishing Scotland Tay Salmon Released to Spawn.

Video of a Tay Salmon being released to spawn. The 2009 season is now over on the Tay in Perthshire, Scotland. It has been one of the hardest seasons on record and it is fitting that this video shows a 14 pounds salmon going off into the depths of the silvery Tay to lay its eggs for the future.
Everyone who works on the river Tay would like to thank everyone who has released salmon back to the river over this past difficult year. Hopefully with increasing endeavour over the future the Tay will come back to its former greatness.

Autumn has certainly arrived on Tayside in Scotland over the last few weeks and the leaves are turning to all the golden colours. The views can be spectacular at this time of year with just a little sun.
