Salmon Fishing Scotland River Tay Spring Salmon Fishing Report for week ending 30th April 2011.

Salmon Fishing Scotland River Tay Spring Salmon Fishing Report for week ending 30th April 2011.

River Tay Spring Salmon Fishing Report for week ending 30th April 2011.

The last week of April on the Tay was again encouraging with settled water and ideal conditions for spring fishing however the lower river levels seemed to curtail catches but the river still produced some top quality salmon throughout the river. There has again been some top quality fly fishing throughout the river as well with superb conditions and enjoyable weather. The settled river will give us good prospects for this coming week but we could do with a freshen up with some rain and fresh water.

The river remained settled for the entire week, and the river temperature moved up to around 52 degrees Fahrenheit or 11 degrees Celsius.

57 spring salmon were reported last week, with the best spring salmon of the season being caught, a magnificent estimated 38 pounds being caught at Glendelvine by Andrew McAdam on Wednesday. This was again superb news for the Tay with more confirmation of multi-sea winter salmon running the river.

On the lower river 25 fresh spring salmon were caught. The river temperature is coming up now encouraging the salmon to run hard. The lower part of the Tay is certainly witnessing this with limited catches however above Stanley catches continue to improve.
Islamouth, Cargill, Ballathie, Stobhall and Taymount continue to catch throughout the week with some excellent sport. 13 salmon were caught on the Islamouth beat this week and all caught fly fishing. John McElroy’s party at the end of the week accounted for 8 fish.
Ian Mitchell, Neil Tong and Alum Williams were all successful. On Taymount Barry Ward caught a lovely 9 pounds salmon on a Rapala in the Alderns on Friday and on Ballathie Donny Gow from Crieff caught a 19 pounds salmon from the Craddle on the bottom beat. On Saturday Michael Kirkpatrick caught a 10 pounds salmon from Luncarty on a flying C. The lower water has made life a bit more difficult and a touch of rain would certainly help now.
Hopefully the river will remain settled this coming week, which should make for excellent prospects.

The middle river reported 14 which was encouraging. This is a conservative total as the Murthly and Glendelvine beats are not reporting. After the temperature has come up the spring salmon are now running freely into the middle Tay with encouraging numbers being seen on a daily basis.
The heaviest salmon of the week came from Glendelvine with a magnificent estimated 38 pounds spring salmon. Andrew McAdam on his first ever days salmon fishing landed this Tay beauty on a floating Devon in the Garth pool at the top of the beat with the assistance of Scottish Ghillie Steven McIrvine who is pictured with the whopper. The salmon measured 117cm long and had a girth of 62.5 cm, which equates to 38 pounds. Not content with that Andrew caught another salmon weighing 14 pounds. Believe it or not Andrew had the two spring salmon in 3 casts! Not bad for his first day salmon fishing. These are the things anglers all over the world dream of. Well done Andrew. Well done the mighty Tay for producing such valuable salmon.
All of the Tay middle beats including Meikleour, Kercock, Newtyle, Dunkeld House and Dalmarnock are having success and this should continue over the next few weeks. More information from this area would be welcome to expand on this report in the future.

On the upper river 15 were reported, with dropping river levels sport became a bit more difficult but there were still some good catches. Lower Kinnaird, Edradynate, Farleyer and Findynate all had success. On the Tummel the Pitlochry Angling stretch continued to produce especially at the Dam. There are now 707 through the Dam as of Sunday. John Veitch and Ian Horne both heavily involved with the fishings on the River Lochy caught two fish on Pitlochry bank of 9 and 6 pounds. John fished a Green bodied Willie Gunn. Ian a Willie Gunn Flamethrower Varient. Ian also lost a fish just out from the marker stone when his fly line went round a rock.
Pictured is club member Steven Dora with a nice fresh fish about 9 pounds on Tuesday on Portnacraig bank.
There has not been anything officially reported from Loch Tay but I understand there have been quite a few spring salmon landed. Hopefully some details will filter through.

The Isla reported 3 from Coupar Grange.

Many thanks for all the pictures everyone sent me of spring salmon and all who have sent me their individual fishing experiences this and last season on the river.
