Salmon Fishing Scotland River Tay Salmon Fishing Report for the Week ending 30th June 2012.

Salmon Fishing Scotland River Tay Salmon Fishing Report for the Week ending 30th June 2012.

The catches were good last week until torrential rain on Thursday spoiled the end of the week virtually wiping out catches with a big dirty spate. The quality of salmon remained high with fish up to 32 pounds in weight, this was again encouraging and hopefully will continue with good prospects for the coming week.

Settled conditions form the start of the week saw good catches on most days as the river settled down but unfortunately the area was hit by torrential rain on Thursday and the river rose rapidly into a dirty spate wiping out Friday and Saturday, even the Scone Gamefair was cancelled on Saturday and Sunday. The water levels remained above summer level encouraging salmon to run the river and a few grilse are now appearing in the catches. The river should settle nicely for the start of the coming week and the fresh water should spice things up for some good sport. The quality was again exceptional with lots of sea liced fish caught and more multi sea winter salmon landed. Salmon continue to be caught from top to bottom in the river with others caught and not registered meaning fish are running through rapidly and progressing upstream which encourages everyone.

There were 75 salmon and 18 sea trout reported with the largest salmon an impressive 32 pounds caught on the Upper Farleyer beat on the fly by Gordon Stewart. Salmon were landed throughout the system from the Lower River to the Upper River. Sea trout catches have improved.

On the Lower River 34 salmon were landed. The unsettled water did not help the lower river this past week especially on the last few days. At the start of the week catches were reasonable with Islamouth catching 13 but the increased water levels made life a bit more difficult after the good catches of recent weeks. Sport was wiped out at the end of the week. The beats above Stanley had reasonable sport until the spate arrived on Friday and amongst the returns have been some good quality Grilse, which is heartening. The beats below Stanley continue to struggle with the exception of sea trout. Hopefully this will change now July has arrived and fish start to slow down and give everyone a chance.

The Middle River registered 14. Sport was sporadic again with the fluctuating water levels. At Kercock 5 were landed for the week with Wilson Comrie landing a lovely 8 pounds fish on the fly and Alex Henderby caught a 15 pounds fish on a devon. Dunkeld House had another good week landing 7 salmon.
Jack Hood was very pleased with a 14 pounds salmon after loosing a further 3 during the day and this was his first ever salmon. Other successful anglers included John Cranston with a lovely 10 pounds fish from the Cutty Stone.
At Newtyle Calum McRoberts had a cracking 9 pounds salmon fly fishing the tail of the Cotter on Wednesday with a further 2 lost on the beat on the same day.

The Upper River produced 21. Sport continued on the upper area with the beats landing fish on a regular basis. The outstanding catch came from Upper Farleyer, which continues to have a good season. Gordon Stewart, who is a regular on the beat having caught a 20 pounds salmon earlier in the season caught a superb 32 pounds salmon fly fishing in the Junction pool with the Lyon and landing it a fair bit further down river after a tremendous battle on a self tied Munroe. Hopefully there will be pictures of this magnificent salmon, which is a potential Malloch Trophy winner for the river. Lower Kinnaird continued producing good salmon with Australian visitor Gary Johncock being one of the successful rods landing a 7 pounds beauty on the fly. Grilse have also been reported here as they filter upstream. Salmon continue the stream through the Dam at Pitlochry with the total at over 2700. This is benefiting Loch Faskally with 5 reported.

The Isla registered 6. Coupar Grange caught 5 and 1 from Keithick Mains.

The Earn registered 0.

The Tay Conservation Dinner will be held at the Dunkeld Hilton Hotel on Saturday 20th October 2012.

Many thanks for all the pictures everyone is sending of salmon and thanks to all who have sent me their individual fishing experiences on the river. I would be most grateful if you would continue to do the same by emailing robert.salmonfishing@googlemail.com to be included in this report.
