Salmon Fishing Scotland River Tay Salmon Fishing Report for the Week ending 11th August 2012.

Salmon Fishing Scotland River Tay Salmon Fishing Report for the Week ending 11th August 2012.

The catches were reasonable last week despite unsettled conditions, very peaty water for several days and everyone had to work hard to gain this. The weather has now improved thankfully over the last few days and we need that to remain to maintain good sport this week as grilse and top quality summer salmon continuing to run the river in numbers. The quality of salmon remained high with fish up to 23 pounds in weight, this was again encouraging and hopefully will continue with good prospects for the coming week.

Conditions were difficult throughout the week and everyone had to work hard for success. River levels fluctuated during the week from unsettled weather with low pressure dominating but this has now settled back nicely. The water levels are now at summer level encouraging salmon to run the river and a strengthening of the run is expected to improve catches further. The river will be settled for the start of the coming week but rain is forecast so hopefully this will not spoil things too much. The quality was again exceptional with lots of sea liced fish caught and more multi sea winter salmon landed. Salmon continue to be caught from top to bottom in the river with others caught and not registered meaning fish are running through rapidly and progressing upstream which encourages everyone.

There were 149 salmon and 9 sea trout reported with the large salmon of 23 pounds landed on Cargill and Farleyer. Salmon were landed throughout the system from the Lower River to the Upper River.

Beat catches reported
(week ending 11th August)

Total: 149 Largest: Cargill & Farleyer Lower 23lbs
SEA TROUT: Waulkmill 1, Luncarty 1, Upper Redgorton 1, Fishponds 2, Stobhall 2, Taymount 1, Murthly 2 1.

On the Lower River 113 salmon were landed. Despite a reasonable total salmon were hard to come by on the lower river with the exception of Almondmouth where 34 fish were landed throughout the week up to 22 pounds. At the start of the week unsettled weather brought the river up and left a dark peaty stain, which took most of the week to clear. This has now cleared and we saw better catches at the end of the week with more fish showing as they ran through the beats. All the beats reported success but with a great deal of effort. On Pitlochrie and Benchil visiting anglers Tom Lumley and Gordon Hyslop had success at the end of the week.
On Cargill Richard Penrose caught a lovely 23 pounds salmon from the Pot Shot. There is a real feeling if the weather settles down and the river runs at a consistent height the sport will be tremendous, as there seems to be a good run on and this will strengthen over the next few weeks.

The Middle River registered 22. On Kercock 5 salmon were landed on Monday with
Jim Lamb catching one at 8 pounds and also 14 year old Matthew Kaye landing his first ever salmon, a 4 pounds grilse. Well done Matthew. On Newtyle the fly was responsible for some success. Mike McDermott caught his first Tay salmon fly fishing from the Steps and
George Ewings achieved the same in the Boil. Well done to you both and haste ye back!

The Upper River produced 12. The river has dropped curtailing sport on the upper areas but more rain will help them this week. Salmon were caught but in much reduced numbers. The current count at the Pitlochry Ladder is over 4200.

The Isla registered 2 salmon all from Keithick Mains.

The Earn registered 1 from Upper Aberuthven.

The Tay Conservation Dinner will be held at the Dunkeld Hilton Hotel on Saturday 20th October 2012.

Celebrate a Tay spring salmon with a Dalmore Tay Dram and contribute to the future of this mighty river. Dalmore distillery have created a unique expression of their single malt whisky and a generous donation from each bottle sold will be gifted to the Tay Foundation to support their work to protect and improve the river.

Many thanks for all the pictures everyone is sending of salmon and thanks to all who have sent me their individual fishing experiences on the river. I would be most grateful if you would continue to do the same by emailing robert.salmonfishing@googlemail.com to be included in this report.
