Salmon Fishing Scotland river Tay, Perthshire, Scotland Report for week ending 2nd March 2013.

Salmon Fishing Scotland river Tay, Perthshire, Scotland Report for week ending 2nd March 2013.

The conditions last week were superb on the Tay in Perthshire, Scotland with ideal conditions but cold and wall to wall blue sky’s day on day and catches followed filling everyone with more optimism for the coming week. The good news for this week is that we have milder conditions giving us more water with snow melt and the prospect of some rain on lower levels which may encourage more salmon to run the river plus higher tides with a colder weather forecast for the latter part of the week, which will maintain early spring sport on this marvelous river.

The Spring Salmon fishing is never easy but when settled conditions prevail the sport can be magical as proved this past week with some outstanding catches with about 40 spring salmon registered in the Tay system. Spring salmon were caught all week up to 20 pounds in weight and throughout the river. The Tay is fishing currently very well and is certainly a good destination to catch your first spring salmon of the season. The river offers a variety of possibilities for all standards of anglers with ghillies only too keen to teach the novices and this mighty river can produce a memorable salmon for the keen fly fisher. Levels have dropped and the pools can be easily covered from bank and boat with modern technology. Why not have a go and sample this magical river. The fishing is supreme and the scenery is not bad either.

Spring salmon have been caught throughout the system this past week encouraging everyone. The Upper reaches have encountered fresh salmon again, as fish have been keen to run with good water levels earlier in the month despite cold temperatures. The Kinnaird beats have caught with Neil Glencross landing a 14 pounds springer from Ash Tree pool on lower Kinnaird on Friday. Steven Watt from Perth was successful at Pitlochry Dam on Monday and Dalguise continued their great stat with 2 spring salmon on Wednesday.

On the middle river a few spring salmon were caught this last week.

At Dunkeld House Ron Pearman landed a 13 pounds springer on a copper Salmo at the Chestnut Tree pool on Friday. Further down river on Newtyle a couple of spring salmon were landed in the week with

David Park catching a 7 pounds beauty fly fishing in the Boil on Saturday. Earlier in the week Brian Flowers caught a 9 pounds salmon on a Toby from the Cotter Bay. The Murthly beats also accounted for a few fish during the week. At Kercock Alistair Roger was the only successful angler catching an 11 pounds salmon fly fishing. When the water starts to warm up the middle river will start to fair better.

The lower river dominated the catches understandably with colder conditions and a dropping water. Islamouth had the odd success during the week and on Ballathie, Ghillie George McInnes produced a cracking springer on Monday with a 14 pounds salmon also landed during the week. Stobhall and Taymount have been catching as well accounting for 8 salmon between them. At Stobhall Kenny Scott caught 14 pounds beauty from the boat on the Upper beat. Meanwhile on Taymount on Monday Les Hutchison had a good day landing a 13 pounds beauty in the morning in the Alderns and then proceeded to catch a 14 pounds cracker in the afternoon the same part of the river. Retired ghillie George Maitland made a welcome return catching an 11 pounds fish from the Majors Cast on Tuesday.

The ladies couldn’t keep out of the action with Angela Summerville landing a superb 14 pounds springer on Saturday from the boat and regular Taymount angler John Collins got into the act as well catching a 12 pounds salmon from Finford Head. It was another successful week at Stanley with 6 salmon from the various beats. On Upper Scone Martyn John had a magnificent 18 pounds springer caught in Cawn Pore on the Pitlochrie beat.

On Tuesday on the same beat former Ghillie Jimmy Last had a day to remember landing 2 cracking spring salmon from the boat weighing 15 and 16 pounds respectfully. The Catholes also continues to fish well with Alan McCaig and Freddie Sutherland both being successful on Wednesday. On Saturday Stevie McGrandles landed a 10 pounds spring salmon from Horsey on the Pitlochrie beat. Below Stanley Fishponds and Upper Redgorton have been successful as well with a superb 20 pounds springer being caught on the Lower Scone fishing’s on the fly.

It was certainly another week to remember with some great springers caught, amazing weather and good conditions but now as we enter March with more settled weather and river levels the spring catches should improve further over the coming weeks assuming the run continues.
