Salmon Fishing Scotland river Tay, Perthshire, Scotland Report for week ending 3rd August 2013.

Salmon Fishing Scotland river Tay, Perthshire, Scotland Report for week ending 3rd August 2013.

The conditions are improving and more favorable on the Tay in Perthshire, Scotland with better weather; slightly lower water temperatures and more rain, a steady low water and catches improved again this past week. The weather is now better and the forecast for this week of sunshine and showers will hopefully encourage better sport on this marvelous river and spread it throughout the whole river.
Summer is still here but with cooler river temperatures and some rain hopefully making settled conditions to improve sport as has proved this season so far with some outstanding catches and numerous spring salmon registered in the Tay system above expectation, let us hope the sport can be maintained for the remainder of the season then it will certainly be one to remember in years to come. The Tay is currently fishing better with improving conditions after low warm water, salmon run this mighty river every day of the year due to its vast volume of water and is certainly a good destination to catch a salmon. Cooler temperatures and recent rain will spice up the river and help to encourage more salmon to run. The salmon gods are hopefully going to bless us with a good run of grilse and summer salmon. The river offers a variety of possibilities for all standards of anglers with ghillies’ only too keen to teach the novices and this mighty river can produce a memorable salmon for the keen fly fisher. Levels have now risen and temperatures dropped to hopefully encourage more salmon to run the river and spread out. Pools can be easily covered from bank and boat with modern technology. Why not have a go and sample this magical river. The fishing is supreme and the scenery is not bad either. Currently the nature along the river is tremendous with numerous wild flowers. Ospreys visit the river on a daily basis and you could see an Otter or a Kingfisher darting past while you are in mid cast! It is true what they say, “ a salmon is a bonus!”

Beat catches reported

Salmon have been caught throughout the system this past week encouraging everyone after rain and cooler river temperatures. Early mornings when the river is at its coolest or evenings are the best options. The Upper reaches are now struggling for salmon as warmer conditions dominate. The Upper River registered 1 salmon last week from Lower Farleyer.

The Tummel system registered 2 salmon from Loch Faskally. The Tummel has struggled with bright weather and low water. Salmon are still running through the Dam in numbers. Currently there is now over 4800 salmon through the ladder, which is now a good increase on last year.

On the Middle River 58 salmon were caught this past week and continues to fish reasonably well despite current conditions. Conditions have improved but are still difficult however the beats are reporting seeing several salmon in the pools and catches are optimistic. A little water has spiced things up again but early mornings and evenings remain productive. Lower Kinnaird had a few fish during the week with favoured pool being the famous Ash Tree and caught all fly fishing. On Dalguise there was another first with Stephen Boyd hooking and landing his first ever salmon. A great way to kick off August with a cracking 8lb hen fish caught on a red Flying C at the tail of the Bridge Pool. Stan has been seeing plenty fish, so hopefully more to follow later. On Dunkeld House, the boys are back from Russia and ready for more Tay action. A few were caught during the week with Jim McDonald catching one in the Rock Pool on a Sun Ray and Brian Joseph unluckily loosing a couple. Newtyle have started to do better after the recent rains.

Fish of the week went to 14 year old Jamie White landing his first ever salmon from the Boil weighing 3 pounds. The Murthly and Glendelvine beats continue to do well. Stevie McIrvine managed to have a cast himself on Glendelvine and caught a superb 18 pounds beauty on the fly. Kercock reported 4 salmon with Ian MacMaster landing 2 grilse and Robin Baird and John Campbell landed a fish a piece.

The Lower River had 103 salmon for the week following a few more fish running. Islamouth was again successful with consistent catches for the week. At the start of the week George Mason’s party did well on Wednesday catching 8 salmon up to just below 20 pounds and loosing several others. Ballathie and Cargill have started to do much better with good catches for the week as fresh water spiced the river up, which is expected for the beats in the current conditions with deeper gorge like pools. Cargill had an excellent week with 23 salmon.

Kurtz Hienberg caught a superb 22 pounds salmon. On Thursday Paul Goldsmith and David Brodie had a good day landing salmon up to 15 pounds. The extra water has helped Stobhall and Taymount with the later beat landing 12 for the week. Les Meek had an afternoon to remember on the Catholes stream landing 3 fish on a spinner after fly fishing for most of the day. He caught an estimated 8 pounds Sea Trout and an 18 pounds and 10 pounds salmon in less than 2 hours. Superb sport as the Tay started to rise from rain. Fishing on the Stanley beats and the beats below Stanley has been hard with seemingly few fish running but hopefully this will change this coming week. Almondmouth have had a few fish but not the numbers expected with the fresher water encouraging salmon to run.

The Isla registered 0 salmon but the recent water has made fish run and this figure does not reflect the truth. Salmon have run the Ericht this past week as well. Dougy Morrison had a good experience with two young German brothers, Moritz Reihs aged 13 and Lennard Reihs aged 11 went for an afternoon’s fishing on the river Ericht. It is their first time in Scotland and also first time salmon fishing. Moritz caught a lovely six pounder and an hour later his brother caught a four pounder that spent most of its time cart-wheeling up and down the pool much to the delight of the parents. Fantastic story for the young anglers. Well done!
It was certainly a much better week with improved conditions and more fish were caught, the river must hope for yet more cooler weather and some rain with lower river levels to encourage salmon to run over the coming weeks and spread throughout the entire system. The youngsters are certainly the story of the week on our system and should be encouraged as much as possible. Please maintain the Catch and Release code for the river to protect our sport for the future.
